　　从那时起我收藏研究老法的书画

　　深深敬佩他做人老实低调

　　但作品艺高胆大奔放潇洒生动

Lao Fa,the Swan Painter in China Mainland by Zheng Xuyang(Taiwan)

　　Thirty years ago,when China began practicing its reform and opening up policy,letters sent from Taiwan tO Beijing were often found with the words"To Lao Fa,the Swan Painter,"and lots of his friends'homes in Taiwan could see Lao Fa'S paintings.Swans are birds of heaven,through which God can convey auspicious messages tO us；SO they win our respect,anticipation,and protection for them.Since then,I have been studying and collecting the works of painting and calligraphy by Lao Fa.1 was deeply impressed by his bold and imaginative expressions in his works that form a contrast with his low-profiled integrity.But Lao Fa'S works are high in artistic merits and full of vivid imagination and refreshing vitality.The works of painting and calligraphy by Lao Fa are referred to by many Taiwanese friends as the contemporary national treasures,the spirit of China.

　　Twenty years ago,Lao Fa flew to the west coast of British Columbia.Often,looking to the east,has he been missing his homeland.He founded the BC College of Painting and Calligraphy,and he himself took the position as president.Lao Fa taught in his theory：that what the West learned from the East was its culture and theory of art,while the East learned from the West its science and technology.The arts first helped introduce new materials and tools,such as paper-making in China and chemistry in the West,and then were created artists who used all those combined.Lao Fa'S studio has fostered,for many years,a large number of native—born,talented students in arts with straight As in design and painting.Now many of students have become celebrity artists in various communities.The students,by applying the artistic point of view of their teachers into their paintings,explain,via translation to the Western artists,the specific artistic expression in Chinese painting and calligraphy.The Western artists always responded to it in exclamation by saying that the Oriental arts are amazing!By applying Oriental traditional aesthetic theory,combined with its artistic viewpoints,the Western modern art quickly caught up with the trend by their artists to have their pens dipped with colors.Van Gogh set a good example in learning from the Orient in this field,while Picasso also worked very hard in learning from Master Qi Baishi.Many students often come back to pay a visit to their teacher.They enjoy listening to their teacher'S vivid elaboration of his theories,that Lao Fa,through painstakingly studying the Western theory in fine arts,raised a series of theories of his own in these areas：the East seeing the dawn while the West viewing the sunset,one is to learn to express cursive script in abstract perspective,that is,a bit of white point in the Western style in expressing light and color and a little black(referred tO as color of ink)in the Oriental manner.With mighty strength hard enough to seemingly penetrate the paper,he Vigorously practices painting and calligraphy.He carries though his motto that a master shall be afloat and flexible in his artistic implementation.

　　With the idea in mind that painting and calligraphy are inseparable good brothers,he started practicing Oriental culture and arts at his childhood.It helped to have laid a good foundation for his later achievements in both areas of painting and calligraphy.

　　He takes different perspectives in viewing the new things and the old ones,as well as the Orient and the West,realizing that the Greater China accommodates the arts of the World.

　　He endeavors to learn to be a true man with integrity.

　　Stippling,if amplified by hundred folds,one can see modern times；while enlarged by thousand folds,one can foresee the activism in future and so on.Lots of his theories are so thoughtful that make people to conduct a further exploration.Deans of many world-renowned art institutes have praise Lao Fa for his insights and thoughts on many debatable theoretical issues.

　　It is not easy for regular civilians to understand the obscurity reflected in Lao Fa's works because they utterly get rid of vulgarity.Lao Fa is a pioneer who set an unprecedented example in applying cursive calligraphy in the expression of picturesque paintings by utilizing pen strokes as bones and ink as flesh.In this seemingly pure traditional meditation—like technique,he demonstrated the elegant proportional form of a modern girl.His works are featured as a vivid and artistic rhyme of pen using a technique into a brilliant and gorgeous ink in order to reflect its texture.The world acclaims Lao Fa'S works as the ever-changing elegance of a beauty that was achieved by using various grades of ink in search for the change of colors；to some extent,juSt leaving only traces of water without even light ink.

　　Qi Gong (July 26,1912-june 30,2005)highly praised Lao Fa'S works as"extraordinary achievement in painting and calligraphy."Liu Bingsen~(1937-February 15,2005)commented on Lao Fa'S calligraphy："Like clouds floating above running water.'Swan Lake,the long scroll painting accomplished by Lao Fa at his middle age,has won fame in both China and abroad.Lao Fa paints,in the template of human beings,swans as symbols of love,with which he plays an active role in setting up a bridge of friendship,strait-crossing to Taiwan,and he also conveys a message of friendship to the West.The swan he painted is featured in his skillful method of ink strokes that has outspoken his genius passion toward the subject.Dancers in his paintings are shown in lots of forms,with dancing figures like cursive writing.A real master does not rely on powder(ink)to show ingenuity,with cursive script seeking rhythmic expression；and the expression of rhythm pursues meaningful cursive.The positive summarizing style can be detected in his works with a rising trend of fewer strokes that is approaching meaningful realm of calligraphy in cursive script.The meaningfulness,rather than ecstasy,is emphasized in Lao Fa's cursive script.The calligraphy of cursive script reveals rhythmic perfection with the landscape reflecting the beauty in its random composition.The profoundness of a painter is reflected in the free transit of his methodology that combines his artistic cultivation with dialectical differentiation.

　　Everyone beautifies his home with artistic elements,and every family lies in flowers.By his painting,the natural scenery of the West,he writes about the feelings of his homesickness.An insider,having viewed Lao Fa's album of painting and calligraphy,told me that by seeing his works,it urges him to meet Lao Fa by himself.This man is extraordinarily good overall in artistic ingenuity.Currently,many of his calligraphy and paintings are collected by several heads of state of different countries.

　　A collection of different nations constitutes the world,and it is a distance that creates beauty.The Westerners highly appreciate the pure and traditional art that Lao Fa achieved,through the elaboration of an interpreter.And many of Lao Fa'S works are living in the Western world.

　　Congratulations to Prof.Lao Fa for his successful publication of his second album of painting and calligraphy,with expectation that his third album is coming soon.

　　Wishing Prof.Lao Fa a prosperous life of longevity in good health,anticipating to see more of his God—blessed works.
